1:40 PM Interactive Working Group Session Towards a Multi-Modal Teaching and Learning Space

The benefits of pedagogies based on active or collaborative learning are well known, but do they drive spaces that are too inflexible? The concept of a ‘multi-modal’ teaching and learning space would facilitate a wide range of pedagogies, helping to enhance educational outcomes and improve space utilisation.
The session will firstly outline some spatial concepts and pilot studies before opening up a workshop for delegates to test these emerging concepts and suggest improvements.”
Introductory Presentation
  • Summary of evidence to support improve educational outcomes through new pedagogies (active/collaborative/flipped learning etc.)
  • Overview of poor space utilisation across the HE sector – ongoing challenge to improve
  • Typical spatial typologies that support specific pedagogies (examples)
  • Concept of a ‘multi-modal’ spaces that can support multiple teaching pedagogies and also support informal learning
  • Introduce three initial ‘multi-modal’ space design concepts
Workshop
Broken down into separate groups where each group will review one space design concept against four factors:
  1. Pedagogy
  2. Space
  3. Technology
  4. Furniture
  • Findings, summary and recommendations
